Amazon stops selling e-bikes in California that go faster than 28 mph (45 km/h).

May, 2026 Florida US

Amazon has stopped selling e-bikes in California that go faster than the legally permitted maximum speed of 28 mph (45 km/h). This happened after an investigation by a local TV station discovered multiple models offering speeds of more than 40 mph via the platform.

California authorities are once again warning of the growing risks surrounding so-called “e-motos” and non-compliant e-bikes. By law, e-bikes in California may
not:

• provide pedal assistance above 28 mph
• have throttle assistance above 20 mph
• have a engine power output above 750 watts

Vehicles exceeding these limits are legally considered mopeds or motorcycles, with associated requirements such as registration, insurance, a driver's license, and age restrictions.

The discussion about  safety is intensifying. In Southern California, the number of injury accidents involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles rose by no less than 430% over the past four years. Additionally, there have now been more than 100 fatalities in the United States due to accidents involving these vehicles.

This development shows that regulation, safety, and enforcement are going to play an increasingly important role within the international e-bike market. For manufacturers, retailers, and consumers, it is becoming more important than ever to clearly distinguish between legal e-bikes and vehicles that actually fall under the category of moped or motorcycle.

Breaking News: The Launche of CycleVision Consulting & Supply

January 13, 2026: After more than 18 years of working with leading brands, retail organizations, and international sales teams, I founded CycleVision Consulting & Supply to help companies turn market opportunities into sustainable business growth.

Throughout my career, I have built an extensive network across Europe and the United States and developed hands-on experience in sales, business development, retail, and the bicycle and mobility industry. In recent years, my activities in the US have further strengthened my understanding of the opportunities—and challenges—companies face when entering and developing new markets.

Conversations with manufacturers, retailers, and industry organizations consistently highlighted two key challenges: How do we successfully enter a new market with the right strategy, partners, channels, and local execution? And how do we adapt our organization to changing market conditions while becoming leaner, faster, and more commercially effective?

These challenges became the foundation for CycleVision: combining strategic expertise, international market knowledge, a strong industry network, and hands-on execution to help businesses accelerate growth, improve commercial performance, and successfully expand across markets.
